literacy organizations or reading/writing volunteering

Just writing this post up in the hopes that some of you have been involved in literacy organizations or something similar. I've always wanted to get involved in volunteering activity that relates to reading/writing. Only thing is, not many of the literacy programs around here seem to want teenagers around.

It doesn't have to be a literacy program exactly, but some sort of volunteering experience/organization that deals a lot with writing and reading?

I'm thinking I may have to start something of my own if I come across another things that says "You must be 18!" :)

But I'd love to hear about your experiences!

Hey Meg, sorry but this goes off on a tangent and doesn't relate to your post but I was curious about something: I know you're a fellow Diana Wynne Jones lover, so I just thought to ask- did you know DWJ's battling with lung cancer right now? I read the news on another blog* and learning so personally brought me near tears. I immediately thought of other bloggers around that loved her books (like you!) and really wanted to let others know. Her editor at Greenwillow said she's appreciate if people sent her notes; here's the address to mail any correspondence to:

Diana Wynne Jones
c/o Greenwillow Books
1350 Avenue of the Americas
New York NY 10019 USA

Just thought to let you know (if you didn't already) because it's heartening to know that there are others who would care about her plight and perhaps commiserate with me :(

*here's the blog post if you're wondering:

What sad news the above commentator brought you :-(
If you want to volunteer, I suggest asking if you can mentor younger students at your school/ college. At most schools there are reading partnership programmes which team older confident reading role models with younger less conifdent readers.

Or if you have a college/ school librarian have a chat with him/ her. Maybe you could set up a creative writing group for younger students. Certainly you wouldn't need to be an adult.

That's all I can think of right now but I'll pop back if anything else springs to mind.
My recent post Review: Grave Surprise
Try your library. Mine is Brooklyn has lots of volunteer programs and I am pretty sure that some of them are open to teens. Good luck!
My recent post Yet another struggle with the title of "Writer"
When I was 17 I did paired reading. Basically there was this kid that the teachers through were thick. Turns out he was very clever but had a lot of issues going on at home. He didn't know that you could borrow books from the library and was amazed when I told him. He was so happy that he could take a book home to read.

It was a very worthwhile experience, so maybe you could do something like that.

I know for sure that over here being 18 would be part of some kind of child protection rules etc, so you're best looking for a scheme that you could do in a school or college enviornment.
